African Artefacts

African art-makers works through oral tradition, with clear descriptions of appearance, meaning and function handed down to them. There is no intrinsic distinction between art and artefacts: this set illustrates a range of hand-crafted utilitarian objects in several media. Most items are essentially modest, such as containers and head-rests. Some ornate stools are used to enhance prestige.
