African Art

The abundance of African sculpture, in bronze, iron, stone, clay, wood and ivory, is evidence of centuries of creative energy. Instead of imitating nature, its makers amplify what is significant and simplify the unimportant. Figures can represent ancestors, carved as temporary refuges for the dead or commemorative images. Some are fetishes, used to avert evil. Here the emphasis is on the ceremonial and ritual.
