The Expressionists
Here Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck, whose colours shocked Paris in 1905, join the German Expressionists Modersohn-Becker, Nolde, Kirchner, Schmidt-Rotluff, Kandinsky, et al. Their startling visual language was strong colour, distortion and abstraction. After 1918 Dix, Grosz, Beckmann and Kollwitz appeared more brutally honest.
