By the 1880s, French artists were looking beyond Impressionism and exploring new painting techniques. Cezanne wanted his work to be ‘solid and durable’, Gauguin searched for ‘the primitive’ in Brittany and Tahiti. In Paris Seurat experimented with dots, to balance colours and satisfy the eye.
