This set largely portrays leisure activities — picturesque sailing boats, paddling on the beach — although some artists have looked at the cruel, darker aspects of the sea. For painters the seaside offers brilliant light flickering off water, an ever-changing sky, a sense of space and distance. It is also a place for sound, smells and touch.
